What’s the future, do you think, of libraries? Do you and your students still use libraries regularly, or is everything these days so technology-based that you rarely feel the need to venture into those hallowed halls of bookishness (yes, I made that last one up, but you know what I mean)?
When I was little, I used to love trips to the library – the smell of the books, the possibility of finding some hidden gem to lose myself in for a few days (not to mention the fabulously squeaky wooden floors!), and some of that excitement still comes back each time I go into one. Disturbingly, though, there was a news report a couple of months ago about the British Government planning to phase out libraries, in favour of us all borrowing books from supermarkets and pubs. Personally, I think it’s a dreadful idea, not least because future generations would be deprived of those wonderful experiences I remember so fondly. What do you think?
