Three hoorays for Macmillan Dictionary! Or five, to be precise, since this month marks the day five years ago when we launched the online version of Macmillan Dictionary.
A lot has happened since then. The Open Dictionary and BuzzWords sections have become much loved features of the site and with the launch of the Love English Awards, interactive language games and this blog, Macmillan Dictionary has become not only a dictionary and thesaurus for ELT students but a place where learners, teachers and English language enthusiasts come together. And in 2012, when we saw visitor numbers soaring year on year, we became the first ELT dictionary to announce the end of our print dictionaries in favour of its online cousin.
So we are excited to celebrate our 5th birthday and have some special treats in store for you this month.
Today we’re kicking off the first ever Macmillan Dictionary Treasure Hunt where we’re challenging you to find secret letters and discover our secret sentence. The prize? One lucky explorer will win an iPad mini.
Later this month we will launch a brand-new Collocations game and from that day all existing games will also be made available for smartphones and tablets.
And for all teachers and students using our dictionary we have created a video explaining our Red Words and Stars system, showing you which words are the most important to learn.
There’s a lot happening on our social channels too, so head over to Facebook / WhatsYourEnglish and Twitter @MacDictionary for more updates this month.
