Word of the Day

misogyny

The feeling of hating or strongly disliking women, or being prejudiced against them

Allegations of ‘misogyny’ have been in the news recently. The tennis player Serena Williams responded angrily to comments made by the captain of the Romanian tennis team, Ilie Nastase, which she saw as racial abuse of her and her unborn child. She also commented on the sexist abuse that Nastase had launched at her fellow female tennis players at the Fed Cup tie in Romania. Nastase had already raised eyebrows by publicly asking Anne Keothavong the British team captain for her room number. Nastase’s conduct led to his suspension by the International Tennis Federation.

At a recent event in Berlin, President Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, found herself having to defend her father’s attitude to women. As a member of a panel of female business leaders, she responded to comments about her father’s apparent disrespect of women by saying that those women who had worked in her father’s businesses “are a testament to his belief and solid conviction in the potential of women and their ability to do the job as well as any man.”
