Wrong meanings

Posted by on October 13, 2010

Here are a few words that I have struggled with in the past, because their meanings seem to be the opposite of what I think they mean, based on the way they look and sound. Below are a few of my mistaken interpretations: click each italicised word to link to the actual definition and see how it differs from what you see I thought it meant:

truncated extended, like an elephant’s trunk.
inflammable non-flammable.
restive resting and relaxing.

The English language is great but it does sometimes seem unnecessarily hard!
