Word of the Day

yoga

An activity that involves doing physical and breathing exercises to make you stronger and make your mind and body relax.

The 21st June is officially designated as International Yoga Day. In an address to the United Nations the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, suggested that date because it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Being Midsummer Day the date seems appropriate because it is so significant in a variety of ways.

It was appropriate for Mr Modi to select a date because yoga had its origins in India. The Indian prime minister went to Lucknow to celebrate the day with thousands of other practitioners, and other yoga gatherings took place in towns and villages across India and in many other parts of the world.
