Happy St Patrick’s Day!

Today is Saint Patrick’s Day and Macmillan Dictionary’s Word of the Day is craic, an informal term to describe a pleasant conversation or enjoyable time.

The Irish holiday is named after St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and is celebrated worldwide.

A quick glance at the Twitter hashtag #stpatricksday reveals that the most popular words associated with St Patrick’s Day are: Guinness, Irish, happy and green (the colour of a shamrock, and also very much of Ireland (image via @StanCarey).

Over on macmillandictionary.com, leprechaun is one of the most consulted words today.
