Word of the Day

mansplain

mansplain

When a man mansplains something, he explains it to someone, usually a woman, in a patronizing, condescending way that shows he believes he knows more about it than she does because he is a man.

The words mansplain, ‘sexism’ and ‘chauvinism’ are close associates. Many women, even in these enlightened times, experience chauvinistic situations where they are ‘talked down to’ by a man, often a work colleague or a manager. Some men still treat women as though they are intellectually inferior to the male of the species, an absurd attitude that undeniably contributes to the ‘glass ceiling’ phenomenon experienced by many professional women.
