Open Dictionary word of the week: wasta

wasta (noun)

influential or powerful social connections that an individual has
He has a lot of wasta.
(Submitted from the United Arab Emirates)

A recent addition to the Open Dictionary: wasta (seriously not to be confused with waster though this could be its opposite). Wasta seems similar to klout, which is now a way of talking about an individual or company’s influence in social media networking. Wasta, though, doesn’t seem to have taken on in social media, not yet anyway. I do see a blingin’ MC on the horizon, however, with something like: I ain’t a gangsta, I just gotta lotta wasta / and I ain’t a lout,  ’cause I gotta lotta klout … Yes, I’ll stick to microblogging.
