Now there’s an intriguing idea – teaching English through the medium of a supernatural detective series (as featured in last week’s Friday round-up post). It’ll be interesting to see what kinds of ‘functional’ lines the writers manage to weave into it in English, and what kind of language skills viewers develop as a result. I certainly can’t imagine anyone trying to learn English by watching The X Files, though this series in Bangladesh is clearly being custom written, so it’s a slightly different situation. Still, there are many other genres I’d have thought they would have tried before the supernatural crime thriller – ‘natural’ crime thriller, for example, or even just a plain old soap opera. But I guess if you feel the need to say ‘The truth is out there‘ in English, then supernatural is the way to go!
