carbon tax

A tax levied on vehicles and factories that emit excessive carbon.

The Guardian reports that the oil companies ExxonMobil, BP and Shell, plus Stephen Hawking and advisors from the former administration of President Ronald Reagan, have reached agreement on a carbon tax policy.



Those and other interested parties agreed to become founding members of the Climate Leadership Council. The body has already met with White House officials, putting forward a revenue-neutral carbon tax policy.

Public opinion in the US is generally in support of measures to combat climate change, and many Americans see President Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement as a retrograde step.
